Storewide Clearance Sale - 20 to 40 percent off.

It doesn’t really take a genius to figure out that the Stephenville Dunlaps store is closing.

It has been widely reported that about 38 stores owned by the Dunlap Company, including Stripling and Cox in Fort Worth, will be liquidating merchandise but mum's the word from the Fort Worth-based Dunlap Companyon the status of the local department store.

Numerous attempts to get the official word on the rumored store closing from the Fort Worth office were unsuccessful. A press statement was to be issued by last Friday, according to news reports, but no such statement was issued.

Kelly Berry, store manager, said she had been instructed not to give any statements to the media, but she did say the whole situation has been frustrating for her. She said she has tried numerous times also to get an official statement from the company.

“I appreciate the tremendous support our customers and the town of Stephenville has shown,” Berry said.

Berry said the store has about 20 employees.

Friday and Saturday signs were being posted for the clearance sale along Washington Street.

The store provides a variety of items from clothing to housewares and caters to a more mature clientele.

The E-T has received information that the liquidation sale will begin on June 14.
