E-T Staff Report

For the fourth year in a row, The Lone Star Arena in Stephenville will once again play host to an exciting two days of professional bull riding.

On Friday and Saturday night, the Spring Spectacular will feature 70 of the best bull riders and some of the toughest bulls from across the country. Almost 200 bulls from as far away as California and Florida and as far north as Colorado will begin arriving in the “Cowboy Capital of the World” this week. It’s the 2010 Spring Spectacular CBR Horizon Tour presented by Bradberry’s Best in Dublin.

This year’s event will benefit Stephenville High School Project Graduation and seniors will be a part of the event staff at the Lone Star Arena.

The entire event is produced by looksWEST Productions, owned and operated by Randy and Amber Schmutz and headquartered in Stephenville. Randy has made his living traveling the country announcing some of the largest PRCA Rodeos and Bull Riding events for the past 20 years, including last year’s PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville.

“I’ve lived in Stephenville for 18 years and my wife, Amber and I love this community,” said Randy. “I have three kids in the Stephenville school system and we’re excited about joining up with the SHS seniors this year. The local businesses have really gotten behind this and we’re hoping to write a big check to Project Graduation at the end of this event!”

Not only are the cowboys riding for big money and the title of “Champion Bull Rider,” the bulls are bucking for bragging rights, too. One hundred fourteen two-year-old bulls will perform for their share of almost $90,000 in cash and prizes at 10 a.m. Friday. Sixty three to four-year-old bulls will also compete for a piece of almost $60,000. This year’s Futurity Champion Bull will also win a brand new trailer.

“Bucking bull breeders from all over the country love coming to the Cowboy Capital of the World”, said Randy Schmutz. “There will be over 125 different bucking bull breeders and stock contractors from eight different states at the Lone Star Arena. We are also excited to have the 2009 CBR Bucking Bull of the Year, ‘Texas Cocktail’ at our event this year. ‘Texas Cocktail’ was also voted among the top three rankest bulls in the PRCA last year! This is not only an exciting event from the bull rider standpoint, but the National Bucking Bull Association (NBBA), too. A separate core of NBBA judges will evaluate the bulls in the competition to decide who’s the best in Stephenville.”

Activities will kick off Friday morning with a NBBA two-year-old Futurity competition inside the Lone Star Arena. Two-year-old bulls will be shown bucking with a mechanical bull rider for six seconds and evaluated by six judges. Each bull will be given a score to determine the top 20 bulls at the conclusion of the competition. This is a non-ticketed event and the public is welcome to attend.

Bull Riding action begins Friday night at 7:30 pm and will feature 35 professional bull riders from the CBR (Championship Bull Riding) in the first performance with the top 10 scoring contestants advancing to the Championship Round later that same night. This year will feature a “Who’s Who” list of talented bull riders including the current and 2 time PRCA World Champion, J.W. Harris and CBR World Champion, Bonner Bolton. A long list of National Finals Rodeo bull riders include Clint Craig, Cooper Kanngiesser, Clayton Foltyn, Jarrod Craig, Tate Stratton, Douglas Duncan, Dave Samsel, Bryan Ridchardson and D.J. Domangue. They will be competing over the two nights to see who will be the Spring Spectacular Bull Riding Champion this year. The action will finish at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the final performance with 35 more CBR contestants and another 10-man Championship Round.

Gizmo McCracken from Wheaton, Missouri will return this year as the featured entertainer, clown and “funny man”. Also added to the line-up is Anthony Lucia, an outstanding trick roper and lariat master. Tarleton State University Fraternity members will be competing in the “Wild Steer Saddling” competition on Friday night. After the bull riding on Friday and Saturday nights, the entertainment continues with singer/songwriter Garrett Bradford from Weatherford providing a free concert.
