A mother was arrested and charged with child endangerment Wednesday evening after allegedly failing to ensure that her 11-year-old daughter received proper follow-up treatment after surgery on her arm.

Investigator Donnie Hensley with the Erath County Sheriff's Department said Child Protective Services notified his office that the child needed emergency removal.

Her arm was severely infected, Hensley said. The girl was taken to Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital for emergency treatment and her mother, 34-year-old Darla D-Shay Cooper Qualls, was taken to jail.

Hensley said the child was injured during the summer, when her arm was cut after she plunged it through a glass window. Surgery was performed and Hensley said the mother did not follow instructions for follow-up care and school officials notified CPS of the child's condition.

The girl was released to custodial grandparents and CPS made arrangements for medical treatment at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Qualls is being held on a $10,000 bond.
