School administrators often warn new teachers to wear comfortable shoes, sound advice considering that educators spend so much time on their feet.
Well, feet, are one thing, but who cautions teachers to protect their single most important asset?
That would be their voices.
Teachers suffer the highest incidence of voice box injury in the nation, according to leading vocal researchers throughout the world.
Those researchers were in town recently, speaking at an international conference on occupation voice injuries at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
And their findings show that for all the things teachers do to help our kids, one of the most significant may be how they sacrifice their vocal cords.
While teachers comprise only 4 percent of the work force, they account for 20 percent of patients at voice clinics, the Express-News reported.
Parents have one more reason to appreciate the work teachers do.
