Authorities are searching for a man suspected of assaulting his ex-wife late Monday night at Riverwalk Townhomes, located on E. Washington Street, then fleeing the scene.
Stephenville police were called about 10:15 p.m. Monday by an unknown person reporting that a domestic disturbance was in progress. As police were dispatched to the scene, they were notified that the suspect, Manuel Vargas, 24, had fled in a blue 2003 Yukon.
Police Captain Jason King said officers quickly spotted the vehicle driving erratically in the downtown area near the Erath County Courthouse. Officers attempted to stop Vargas, but he refused. The pursuit was called off after the supervisor on duty told officers that it was too risky to continue.
“Because of the reckless manner in which Vargas was driving, it was determined that it was too risky to continue the pursuit,” King said. “That’s when our officers backed off.”
Vargas’ vehicle was found crashed and abandoned on CR 223 Tuesday morning by a passerby who called authorities. Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Steven Marks said it appeared that Vargas lost control after rounding a curve too fast and crashed into a tree.
Authorities continued searching for Vargas on Tuesday. He is also wanted on an outstanding warrant stemming from a separate charge.
