Special to the E-T
Second-grader Madisyn Grimes’ artwork will be featured on the T-shirts of Harris Methodist Erath County’s (HMEC) third annual 2 Your Health Fun Run/Walk. The event, to be held on Saturday at Stephenville City Park, is designed to help local children fight obesity.
“Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in our nation, according to the Center for Disease Control,” said Shane Wall, physical therapist at HMEC and chair of the Fun Run. “I am working with local schools to promote the importance of physical exercise, not only for the children, but the parents as well. My ultimate goal is to increase the level of physical activity of all ages in our community, so I encourage family members to participate with their children.”
Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. at the Large Pavilion. The two-mile course will wind throughout Stephenville City Park. Strollers are welcome. The cost is $7 to register and entry forms will be available the day of the race. Children on free and reduced lunches can enter the event at no cost. This year’s fun run is expected to attract more than 500 participants.
Awards will be given to the top five boys and top five girls for each grade. An overall award will be given to the first place male and female.
Money raised at the event will be filtered back to the physical education departments of local schools to directly impact the health of the children in the community.
“This is a very rewarding event to participate in or simply watch,” said Wall. “It’s about the children having an event that benefits their well-being and I’m glad that our hospital is taking an active role in battling obesity.”
