An alleged drunk driver plowed through the front glass doors of Bank of America early Thursday morning, then fled the scene.
Stephenville Police Chief Roy Halsell said Christopher Scott Spiech, 33, left the Rockin’ P shortly before the accident occurred. Halsell said when Spiech left the courthouse parking lot, he traveled through the intersection of Washington and Graham before losing control of his vehicle. Halsell said it was raining and the streets were wet.
A witness who saw the accident told police that after crashing through the bank’s glass doors, Spiech drove away. The witness then followed the suspect’s vehicle and called police. Officers caught up with Spiech at Oak Tree West Apartments, where the suspect “failed all field sobriety tests,” Halsell said.
Spiech refused to submit to a breathalyzer or offer blood testing to check his blood-alcohol level.
Spiech was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to leave identification when striking a fixture.
Halsell said officers found Spiech’s front license plate amid the bank’s rubble.
