Officials are searching for a suspect that fled on foot after leading police on a short pursuit early Monday morning.

ďAround 2 a.m., officers observed a car driving recklessly at excessive speeds,Ē said Stephenville Police Chief Roy Halsell.

The officer reported that the vehicle, a 1998 Chevy S10, was traveling east on the South Loop and swerving between lane markings. Halsell said the truck sped by at 80 miles per hour, nearly striking the guardrail that crosses the Bosque River.

Halsell said the driver slowed down and obeyed traffic laws when officers turned on their lights, but did not pull over.

Instead, the driver turned onto US Highway 67 and drove into a field on CR 483.

Halsell said the driver then jumped a fence and took off on foot.

The suspect evaded officers but didnít get away without a trace. Halsell said the driver dropped his cell phone during the pursuit and officers used it to help identify the suspect. Police will not name the suspect until a warrant for his arrest is issued.

The incident is still under investigation, but the driver could be charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, which is a state jail felony.
