Clair Cole and Sarah Mangrum, two local mammographers, are trying to raise awareness and funds to benefit an issue near and dear to their hearts - breast cancer.

The duo is participating in the Breast Cancer 3-day, a walk-a-thon on November 6-8 in Dallas benefiting Susan G. Koman for the Cure and the National Philanthropicust.

“We work in radiology and we are mammographers,” Mangrum said. “We deal with this on a first hand basis.”

Cole and Mangrum each paid a $90 registration fee and committed to raise $2,300 each. So far, they have raised a total of $350 and are hoping others will pitch in through community events.

“We haven’t gone to many businesses because of the economy,” Cole said. “So we’re trying to raise awareness.”

The first fundraising event, “Mugs for Jugs,” will be held at Bull Nettle Sports Bar and Grill on Tuesday, April 7. Beginning at 6 p.m., a percentage of all alcohol sales will help Cole and Mangrum reach their individual goals.

Mangrum and Cole help all types of women through the mammography experience. They both agreed that mammograms save lives.

“We’re finding lumps in younger women due to new technology,” Cole said.

“If you come in and have a mammogram like you’re suppose to, then we can find it sooner,” Mangrum said. “We’re hoping to find the lump before you can feel anything.”

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 2.4 million women are living with breast cancer or have a history of cancer.

Locally, six women have been diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone.

“We deal with this a lot,” Mangrum said. “Some months, we’ll see five or six women diagnosed.”

They are also holding a garage sale at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at 815 Charlotte Avenue beginning. Not only are they looking for shoppers, but donated items to sell.

Anyone interested in helping can contact Cole at 965-7544 or e-mail or call Mangrum at 968-5286.

A “Bowling for Boobs” event is planned for Tuesday, June 2, at Lone Star Lanes. For $10, you can bowl as many games as you can fit in between 6-8 p.m.

They also have “tip jars” placed at several area merchants where you can drop spare change. The jars are located at Scott’s Flowers on the Square, Bull Nettle, G-Lo Studio, The Bijou, The Freak Show, Frames, Etc., Town and Country Bank and the Fitness Center.
