STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Dr. Gabriel Cagwin has been named Vice President for Tarleton State University’s Division of Institutional Advancement. Currently Chief Business Development Officer at Arizona State University, he begins his new duties in September.
He replaces Sabra Guerra, who has served as interim Vice President since July. Guerra will resume her role as the division’s Assistant Vice President for Advancement Services.
As part of Tarleton’s leadership team, Cagwin will provide strategic oversight to advancement services, alumni engagement and university event management, plus opportunities for development giving and fundraising. He also will oversee Tarleton’s W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas in Thurber.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Dr. Gabe Cagwin," said university President James Hurley. "He brings a new perspective that will help us launch the largest capital campaign in our school’s history. Our goal of raising $100 million will enhance access, opportunity and innovation at Tarleton.
"Gabe will lead our team of development and advancement professionals at a time when the support of our alumni, donors and friends is vital to student success."
A member of ASU’s leadership team since 2012, Cagwin oversaw the fundraising campaign for the $306 million Sun Devil Stadium renovation. He manages capital campaigns, assists with ASU’s 330-acre Athletics District to monetize university land and provide assets for the community, and assists with finding and maximizing revenue streams.

Prior to being promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director and, a year later, Chief Business Development Officer, Cagwin served as ASU’s Associate Athletic Director for Development. He helped lead the Sun Devil Club to record fundraising numbers, surpassing $46 million consistently and topping out at $86 million.
Memberships also grew from 8,500 to more than 16,000 under his leadership. And he helped with ASU’s annual fund, major gifts, planned and estate giving, building young alumni and volunteer programs, and implementing sport-specific outreach programs.
Before joining ASU, Cagwin served as Assistant Athletic Director for Development at UCLA, where he helped lead a $135 million campaign to renovate Pauley Pavilion. Recognized as one of the top development officers at UCLA, he assisted in revamping the department’s Annual Giving Fund, established regional fundraising strategies, aided in the school’s first priority point system for basketball, and initiated a number of highly successful events for former letter winners.
Prior to UCLA, Cagwin was the Associate Director of Development at Penn State University, where he was responsible for fundraising programs designed to secure major gifts for both the university and the Smeal College of Business. He has had stints at Tulsa University and was Assistant to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement at St. John Fisher College while finishing his graduate studies.
He graduated magna cum laude with his bachelor’s degree in 2002 and his master’s degree in higher education/student affairs in 2004. He earned his PhD in higher education administration from the University at Buffalo in 2006.
