Black Friday is traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year with businesses awarding discounts to kick off the holiday season.

The E-T interviewed three local business owners to talk about the importance of shopping locally.

Kenneth Gifford, owner of Gifford TV and Electronics, says local support means “everything.”

“We’re local people. We shop locally. We like to see local people shop with us. We support all of our charities and schools in town. We pay taxes here so this is the main thing for us,” he said.

Co-manager at Julianne’s, Shellie Hooper, said she “loves” local support because the community comes together to help small businesses achieve their goals.

“These are people that we are neighbors with, that we go to church with, that we do life with, so to have those people come in and shop with us locally, it means the world because we’re supporting each other,” she said.

Silver Wings Boutique employee Kali Osinga works for her mom, Cynthia Huckabee, and said local support means “supporting home.”

“It’s supporting the fact that she’s a mom and a small business and that she’s able to see her children thanks to the people in town,” she said. “It definitely means a lot to us when people stay local and shop local.”

Online shopping on Black Friday is popular as well.

In 2018, Thanksgiving Day brought in $3.7 billion in online sales, a growth of 28% year over year while Black Friday brought in a record $6.2 billion in online sales, a growth of 23.6% year over year according to www.forbes.com.

The Thanksgiving holiday is definitely the time to shop with statistics showing that in 2018, over 165 million people shopped over the weekend, slightly over the number predicted.

For Black Friday, Gifford’s will have specials on appliances, electronics and TVs. They offer free local delivery and will have special financing available and manufacture rebates on all items.

“This is usually one of the bigger times of year, so [our sales increase] 15 to 20 percent above a normal time,” Gifford said.

Hooper said their fall décor at Julianne’s along with Christmas decorations will be on sale on Black Friday.

For Silver Wings, their sale will include $10 beanies, $22 pullovers and surprise gifts.
