The Erath County Humane Society is over capacity, currently housing over 70 dogs and housing two to three dogs per cage.

To help the animal shelter, Stephenville residents Sharon Gaines and daughter Shirah Peppmeyer are hosting a pet bed and blanket drive from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday at Pet Supplies Plus.

They are accepting new and gently used clean pet beds and blankets.

“Blankets and beds are something that they (the animals) go through pretty fast,” Gaines said. “They get worn out, torn up...blankets, beds, towels, they don’t last very long. The most needed items right now are beds and blankets because it’s getting cold.”

Pet supplies such as food, toys and litter will also be accepted along with cleaning supplies.

"There’s just a lot of the inside aspect that people don’t think about,” Gaines said. “When you think about the shelter, you know they need food, you know they need beds, but you don’t think about the fact that they have to keep the place clean or that they have to pay for vaccinations and the equipment to do microchipping, deworming, trimming, grooming, dental work...they have to take care of all of this. Most of those people that are working up there, they do it on their own time; it’s mostly volunteers.”

A jar will be set out at Pet Supplies Plus for monetary donations for the ECHS to purchase straw for outdoor pens and other items the shelter needs.

Donations can also be dropped off at Bradberry’s Best in Stephenville this week. Please have blankets/beds washed and in trash bags.

Gaines said they are currently planning on putting together a raffle that will benefit the ECHS.

“There's a need. The shelter is overflowing. They’re way over max capacity right now. They don’t have the funding to keep all of the dogs and cats taken care of,” she said.

The Erath County Humane Society is also offering dog adoptions for $20 through Saturday.
