The Stephenville Independent School District’s new K-9 officer Ixi has arrived.

The 2-year-old German Shepherd from Hungary arrived in Stephenville on Friday, and spent part of Monday getting acquainted with students at the high school and junior high.

“(The students) like her,” said school resource officer Joe Sherrod, who is Ixi’s handler. “Ixi is real easy to get along with and she likes all the attention.”

Sherrod spent a month in Abbeville, Louisiana training with Ixi.

She is part of the district’s efforts to bolster school safety and security and is trained in detecting weapons, ammunition and drugs.

“We think this is a good first step,” SISD Superintendent Matt Underwood said in a previous interview.

Ixi will mainly stay at Stephenville High School, but will be sent to other campuses as needed.

Police Chief Jason King said he is excited to see the community support.

“River North Small Animal Hospital has already offered to donate all of her vet care,” King said. “And we really appreciate that.”
