Stepping Stones Day School at First United Methodist Church has been a staple in the community for more than 47 years.

But sadly, as this year’s school year got underway, the doors to the place that has loved and educated young children for so many years closed its doors due to enrollment numbers.

“It is heartbreaking for so many local folks who sent their children to the school as well as the many teachers who taught there,” said Sena Leese, who taught kindergarten for 12 years. ”I’m very sad but I understand why it happened. In this day and time parents work and they need childcare on top of school and we chose not to go in that direction.”

Stepping Stones was the first preschool offered by a Stephenville church. In 1971, June Vissotzky founded the school that taught preschool and kindergarten students.

On Sunday, Sept. 30, FUMC will celebrate Stepping Stones and all who have attended the pre-school and kindergarten through the years.

“We hope many alumni and teachers will come,” Leese said.
