The Erath County Historical Commission will host a combination Juneteenth Commemoration along with the dedication of a historical marker at Mount Olive Cemetery at 7 p.m. June 19.

June 19, 1865 marked the date General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston freeing over 250,000 slaves in Texas.  Now known as "Juneteenth,” the day has been celebrated throughout the state and in other parts of the country. Locally, the dedication of a historical marker at Mount Olive Cemetery will finalize  a project that began with the application to  register Mount Olive as a Texas Historic Cemetery by the Texas Historical Commission. The city of Stephenville will participate in the ceremony since they took over care and maintenance of the property in1971. Everyone is invited to attend and recognize this important part of Stephenville and Erath County history.
