Brush up on your spelling and roundup a team for the third annual Adult Spelling Bee benefiting the TreeHouse After School Program at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Each team can have up to three members — ages 18 and up — and cost to participate is $100 per team.
TreeHouse provides free after school child care to approximately 50 kids and relies on funds from Erath County United Way along with other donations from private citizens.
“First, we want everyone to have fun. To alleviate some of the pressure of a traditional spelling bee, teams will be provided with a dry erase board to write out each word, and team members will work together to determine the correct spelling,” said committee member Jennifer Muncey. “The announcer will pronounce each word to be spelled twice. Teams will have 15 seconds to work together to write the correct spelling on the dry erase board and hold up the board for the judges to see when time is called. If the board is not displayed, the word is considered misspelled.”
Each team can purchase up to two passes, which allows the team to remain in the game if they misspell a word. Passes are $50 each.
“We hope donors and participants will work together to help make this fundraiser an entertaining and successful way to raise money for our children,” said TreeHouse Director Leann Pate. “If a local business would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the event to cover the cost of a team entry and the passes, they can recruit employees and family members to represent their business.”
The event will also feature a silent auction with 68 items starting at 7:30 p.m.
The public is invited to cheer on teams and the deadline for registration is Monday, April 16, with a limited number of eight teams total.
