For the first time since 1992, Erath County is poised to get a new county treasurer - and Kimberly Dowell Barrier wants the job.

Barrier, 40, was born and raised in Stephenville and never left.

“I’m a third generation Tarleton State University graduate where I earned two degrees - a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration,” she said.

Barrier decided to run for office after longtime county treasurer Donna Kelly announced in August that she would not seek another term in 2018.

“Something kept telling me to just go for it,” Barrier said. “I want to do this, I’m excited.”

Before making the final decision to run for the seat, she met with Kelly to talk about the job.

“She will be leaving some big shoes to fill,” Barrier said of Kelly. “She has done an awesome job.”

Barrier is no stranger to this line of work. She is the financial controller for Buckhorn Pumps and currently serves as the finance chair for the Cross Timbers Business and Professional Women’s organization.

“I’ve been a member of that group for over 15 years, and I have held various offices including president, vice president and secretary,” she said.

With three kids ranging in age from four to 17, Barrier is also involved in PTO.

She will run as a Republican.

“I love this community and the people here,” she said. “I love all the events and how people always pull together - it’s an amazing place.”
