An event locals have long hoped for is finally happening this weekend in Stephenville - a farmers market.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. - noon on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the downtown plaza.

The event will continue on the first Saturday of the month in October and November.

Kaylee Pemberton is the president of the Stephenville Downtown Merchants Association and said the organization has worked with the Chamber of Commerce, city of Stephenville, Erath County AgriLife Extension Office and Tarleton State University to bring the event to Stephenville.

“We have all wanted to do something like this for a long time,” Pemberton said. “So we finally got together to make it happen. It’s very exciting.”

Residents looking to buy locally-grown plants, fruits, produce, nuts, seeds, grains, eggs, honey and jam can attend the event at no charge.

Pemberton said the event will not include arts and crafts.

“We want this to be a true farmers market,” Pemberton said.

In the event of rain, which is not expected, the market will be moved underneath the large pavilion at City Park.
