It was a big night at Tarleton State University’s Memorial Stadium when 227 Stephenville High School seniors walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.

Senior class president Caleb Gibbons gave a humorous speech congratulating his classmates.

“Congrats to us for moving on and congrats to the faculty we’re leaving behind,” he said. “You’re finally rid of us.”

SHS teacher Brenda Burks was recognized for her hard work as the graduation coordinator and then the Class of 2017 salutatorian and valedictorian took the stage.

Salutatorian Emily Miller thanked family, friends and her teachers she had over the years giving a special shoutout to her mother.

“Personally, I owe so much to my mom who is the most kind and selfless person I know and I’m so thankful for her,” Miller said. “Remember, life is an unfinished book and we are the authors.”

Valedictorian Laura Waldron stood at the podium thanking the many faculty members who have helped shape who she is today.

“None of us made it here on our own and there are countless wonderful people who helped me get where I am today,” Waldron said. “We’re so fortunate to have attended an amazing school district. We, the Class of 2017, are the next generation. Our time in high school has come to an end, but out journey has just started.”

SHS Principal Stephanie Traweek recognized senior scholarship recipients stating that there were $1.6 million in scholarships awarded this year.

Congratulations to the Class of 2017!
