Starting out in sixth grade, Tira Schaffer has played a little bit of everything as a freshman percussionist in the Stephenville High School Yellow Jacket Band but primarily sticks to snare drum during marching season.

“My dad thought I would love it so he told me to try out and I did,” Schaffer said. “I like it a lot, it’s really fun for me.”

Schaffer said her first year of high school has gone well and is looking forward to improving her skills.

“I’ve tried to become better my first year and hopefully continue throughout high school,” she said.

Competition season has been going well for Schaffer who was part of the indoor drumline that took first place in their division at a recent competition at Bowie High School.

As far as long-term goals, Schaffer has a few that come to mind.

“I’m going to try out for section leader this coming year and try to make state for solo and ensemble every year and area for all region band,” she said. “For section leader I will just kind of keep everybody in line, making sure everyone knows what’s going on and that they’re all on task.”

Schaffer loves music and being a part of Yellow Jacket Band.

“I like that everybody just loves each other and we’re just one giant family,” she said. “And I like music in general, I always have.”

And though she is just a freshman, Schaffer already has an idea of what she would like to pursue after graduation.

“I’m going to become a biologist and play music on the side,” she said. “It’s my favorite subject and I’ve always liked science and in college. I might join the marching band and concert band and possibly some type of band outside of college.”
