The philanthropic Zonta Club is hosting its 20th annual penny auction Saturday, March 4, at the Recreation Hall. The doors open at 5 p.m. and the auctioning starts at 6.

Events like this have raised over $115,000 for scholarships and local businesses. Betty Chew, co-chair, said the event started in Stephenville to create the scholarship for students graduating from Erath County high schools.

Chew said when they award scholarships to students, “We always try to look for those who have the extra need. When we started out we were just giving out $100 a piece.”

The Zonta Club now awards a single-parent scholarship, a nursing scholarship and the Beulah Brown scholarship, which is a rodeo scholarship.

A variety of businesses donating items to the auction range from an Allsups gas gift card, a recliner from Furniture Mart, Heavenly Landscaping is offering two mulched plants, car washes, gift baskets and dog and cat vaccinations.

There are also a total of 15 silent auction items.

This year’s auctioneers are Darrell Brown and first-timer Justin Moore.

Chew said guests should come hungry. A concession stand will be set up with food and drinks for sale.

Chew said guests participating shouldn’t stress about bringing coins because they will be sold at the event.

This year the Zonta Club is doing something different in honor of the 20th anniversary and will be giving away two special gifts that won't be bid on.

“We would love to have a large crowd. It’s really fun and it doesn’t take a lot of money,” said Chew.
