In what was likely an evening that Tarleton was caught looking ahead on their schedule, the TexAnns managed to hold off the Falcons of Texas-Permian Basin (UTPB) (7-18) in a tightly contested Lone Star Conference battle, 67-58.
The Falcons' heads were in the game from the opening tipoff.
UTPB quickly ran out to a 5-0 lead after hitting a three-point shot and then a jumper to send the message to Tarleton that it may not be as easy as it was when the TexAnns won by 27-points in the first match of the season in Stephenville.
However, Tarleton's Mackenzie Hailey quickly showed that she and her teammates were ready for whatever was coming as she led the TexAnns on a 12-0 run, including scoring four straight field goals and the team's first eight points.
For the most the first half the TexAnns had solid control, but the Falcons did well to keep the game within reach entering halftime trailing by only four, 39-35.
Both offenses stumbled coming out of the break as they combined for only 20 points in the third quarter, 10 each, leaving the TexAnns with 10 more minutes of protecting a slim 49-45 advantage.
Nearly three minute into the fourth period, two Ikpeaku Iwobi field goals and a Bailey Wipff jumper held the TexAnns go on a 8-1 run, extending their lead to 10 points, 55-45.
Things didn't exactly get any easier for the TexAnns through the final seven minutes as the Falcons continued to draw within eight or nine points of their lead, but the TexAnns did enough to clinch their 12 Lone Star Conference victory of the season.
Ikpeaku Iwobi and Mackenzie Hailey were the only Tarleton players to finish in double-digits in scoring, both with 18. Bailey Wipff added eight points, while Tiara Tatum, Trejouir Wilson and Travanti Downes all scored six points.
The TexAnns are now 13-12 on the season and 12-7 in conference play. They will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Canyon to take on West Texas A&M.
