After a lengthy hiatus, the Accidental Band will return to the stage Thursday at Twisted J to celebrate the release of Pickers and Poets: The Ruthlessly Poetic Singer-Songwriters of Texas, co-edited by Accidental Band lead singer Craig Clifford and Craig D. Hillis of Austin and published by Texas A&M University Press.
The concert will also serve as a kickoff to the "Throwback Thursdays" series for the Twisted J music venue. From 5-6 p.m. Clifford and Hillis will talk about the book, play a couple of songs that are discussed in the book and sign books.
At 6 p.m. the Accidental Band, with Hillis sitting in on lead guitar, will play a set of songs featured in the book — songs by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Terry Allen, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen and other great Texas songwriters.
The second set will feature songs by lead singer and guitarist Craig Clifford.
Rounding out the Accidental Band are Nancy Easterling on bass and Jim Easterling on drums.
Craig D. Hillis has played guitar for Steven Fromholz, Michael Martin Murphey, Jerry Jeff Walker, and other great Texas singer-songwriters. In his essay in Pickers and Poets Hillis recounts his experiences playing guitar for the recording of Walker's iconic ¡Viva Terlingua! in Luckenbach.
