STEPHENVILLE – Romond Jenkins was awarded the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after averaging a double-double over the week during No. 12 Tarleton's two wins.
Jenkins was the defensive anchor in leading the Texans to wins last week over Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico by averaging 16.5 points on 56 percent shooting, 15 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Against ENMU, Jenkins grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds (11 defensive) to go with 10 points, a career-high three assists and two blocks. Jenkins prevented any Greyhounds player from recording more than seven rebounds.
In the senior night win over WNMU, Jenkins had his best all-around game as a Texan, posting a game-high 23 points while matching career highs with 17 rebounds (11 offensive boards) and six blocks in only 25 minutes of play. The 6-foot-7 forward also logged a game-high four steals. It was Jenkins' 13th double-double of the season, as the Texans remain undefeated when the big man posts a double-double. Jenkins and the Texans limited WNMU to a season-low 45 points on 30 percent shooting. It's the lowest point total Tarleton has allowed since 2015 when they held McMurry to 42 points. For the week Jenkins and the Texans held opponents to 59 points on 40 percent shooting.
It's the third career LSC weekly award for Jenkins, all coming this season. Jenkins is tied for the LSC lead for Player of the Week awards.
Jenkins and the Texans will host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. followed by Saturday's game against Angelo State in Wisdom Gym which will be aired live on ESPN3 at 4 p.m.
