STEPHENVILLE – TexAnn Tennis finished off a 'Tarleton Opening Day Sweep' with one of their own by polishing off Howard Payne in a 9-0 blowout to kick off the 2017 spring schedule.
Tennis joined the Tarleton Baseball team (1-0) and Tarleton Softball team (2-0) in collecting opening day victories Friday afternoon to complete a school-wide sweep for the day.
"The girls have been working hard and their preparation was very good," said head coach Lance Drake. "I thought the girls were very 'workmanlike' in their approach. They showed good focus for the first match."
Doubles started things off with the freshman tandem of Alicia Barbaroux and Tori Simmons winning the first match of the season 8-1 in the No. 3 game just before Erika Johnston, formerly Richarme, and Ashleigh Elward took care of the No. 2 match by the same score.
The No. 4-ranked doubles team in the South Central region – Elena Preadca and Luis Ferraro-Adas – got their first doubles win of the season in the top-seeded doubles match with an 8-2 win.
"We started off a little slow in doubles in regards to our execution, but steadily improved through the match," said Drake.
When Tarleton turned its attention to singles, the TexAnns stayed in complete control as the purple and white earned four of the six singles victories via 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Preadca (2), Elward (3), Barbaroux (5), and Simmons (6) all took their of their matches in flawless fashion.
Johnston took care of the No. 1 match with a 6-1, 6-2 win while Ellie Stevens won the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-4 to cap off the sweep.
"In singles, I though Howard Payne made some good adjustments in their matches," said Drake. "The scores may seem a little lopsided, but we were able to come out on the positive side of some crucial points.
"It's early and we have many areas on which to improve, but there were several positives to take away from today," he continued. "All in all, it was a good day for Tarleton Tennis."
Tarleton will hit the road next weekend for a tournament in Arkadelphia, Ark. The TexAnns will play four matches, beginning with Ouachita Baptist at 4 p.m. on Friday.
