The Stephenville Public Library will offer a free legal advice clinic on Monday, Feb. 13, at the library.

“I think it’s wonderful that the SPL has been chosen to host this program as legal assistance can be very costly,” library director Mary Meredith said. “To provide it free of cost is a great service for the community.”

The project has been put together by Legal Aid of Northwest Texas and TexasLawHelp.org.

“Legal Aid of Northwest Texas is a nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal services to low income residents in 114 Texas counties throughout North and West Texas,” the LANT website states.

TexasLawHelp.org offers similar services to LANT.

Those who attend the clinic will be able to video chat one-on-one with Dallas attorneys who will provide free advice on civil legal issues.

Civil legal issues include divorce, custody, child support, eviction, foreclosure and debt collection. It does not include advice on criminal law, personal injury (car accidents, medical malpractice, etc.) or other prohibited activities.

There will be three steps to follow in order to make the clinic a success.

1. Contact the SPL to receive appointment registration information at 254-918-1240.

2. Arrive at the library on the day of the clinic at your scheduled appointment time.

3. A librarian will then direct you to a computer station and help you get started on the video conference. Once the video starts, a real attorney will have a face-to-face video chat with you.
