The Erath County Commissioners met today in closed sessions and have named Matt Coates as interim sheriff following Tommy Bryant’s death.

"First and foremost we want to convey our condolences to the Bryant family. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with them in this tragic situation," Thompson said. "We (went) into closed session at 9:15 a.m this morning to research the process we need to follow and discuss the possible appointment of an interim sheriff so that we have continuity in law enforcement in Erath County."

Coates is coming out of the District Attorney’s office where he has been serving as DA’s investigator.

He also worked one year in the Erath County Sheriff’s Office and has extensive experience in law enforcement, most of it with the Howard County Sheriff’s Department.

He was sworn in Tuesday and has assumed his duties as interim sheriff.
