With Lone Star Conference play on hold for finals, the TexAnns had their hands full Tuesday night as they ran into a hot shooting Lubbock Christian team.
The TexAnns did themselves no favors early on Tuesday as the Lady Chaps took control early after scoring on their first two possessions and then forcing a turnover which turned into an easy layup to take a 6-0 lead.
Following a Tarleton timeout, the early barrage on the scoreboard didn't end for Lubbock Christian as they responded to a three from Bailey Wipff with another run, this time a 7-0 run to take a 13-3 lead with seven minutes remaining in the quarter.
After trailing 18-10 at the end of the first, Tarleton appeared primed to make it a game again.
The TexAnns made their push through the front court as forwards Ikpeaku Iwobi and Mackenzie Hailey scored eight points out of a 12-4 run which cut the Lady Chaps' lead to only two, 24-22 with 3:19 remaining in the half.
The TexAnns' hope of entering halftime with a small deficit was busted over the next minute and 40 as Lubbock Christian answered Tarleton's run with a 6-0 stretch of their own to end the half with a 30-22 advantage.
The second half was where Tarleton flipped the script from the first few moments of the game as they were the ones who scored five quick unanswered points, all scored by Mackenzie Hailey to reduce their deficit to only three early in the third quarter.
Lubbock Christian stretched their lead back to seven, 44-37, more than halfway through the quarter, but Tarleton guard Tiara Tatum hit a jumper to begin what would become a 10-0 run capped off by two Bailey Wipff free throws that gave the TexAnns their first lead of the evening with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter. However, like the second quarter the Lady Chaps wouldn't allow Tarleton the frame's last laugh as they scored the quarter's final five points to take a 49-45 lead into the game's final quarter.
Lubbock Christian didn't stop attacking once they preserved their lead at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Chaps continued to hit layups and three point shots and eventually found themselves on a 14-2 run which gave them their largest lead of the evening to that point, 60-47 with 7:31 remaining in the game.
The long run that carried over from the third to the fourth quarter was eventually what did the TexAnns in as the Lady Chaps outscored Tarleton 26-21 over the final 10 minutes to leave Wisdom Gym with a 75-66 win.
Lubbock Christian's big edge in the match up was their ability to hit shots from the floor.
The Lady Chaps ended the game shooting 51 percent from the field, while Tarleton only managed to hit 39 percent of the field goals.
Three TexAnns finished the game in double figures, including Mackenzie Hailey who recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits was Bailey Wipff with 18 points and Ikpeaku Iwobi with 14 points.
With the loss, the TexAnns are now 4-6 on the season. Tarleton will hit the hardwood again on Monday, December 19 when they host Northern New Mexico.
