The public is invited to the Graham Street Church of Christ’s free Christmas dinner from 4:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Family Center located at 375 N. Graham.

A large group of volunteers have been working hard to prepare a traditional Christmas meal consisting of turkey, dressing, green beans, candied yams, rolls and peach cobbler.

“We’re going to try and feed 1,000 people this year — we had about 800 last year,” said Larry Branch, event coordinator and volunteer. “Generally 40 to 50 percent of that comes from our carry-outs and deliveries.”

Church volunteers will deliver to Meals on Wheels clients as well as anyone who’s unable to attend.

Take-out and delivery orders need to be placed by 1 p.m. Wednesday by calling the church office at 965-4510.

Like last year, the event will also feature 10 raffle box giveaways, Santa and Mrs. Claus and children singing Christmas carols.

“When they come in they will get a raffle ticket and about every 20 minutes we’ll call out a number. They do have to be present to win,” Branch said. “We’ll also have Santa come out and give little candy canes to all the kids and have some youth sing carols for us.”

Branch said he appreciates all the hours volunteers dedicate to this event that is such a success every year.

“I enjoy the heck out of working with our church members who help us every year. They do all the work — the ladies who do the cooking and guys who help with cleanup,” Branch said. “And I just really enjoy this event because there are a lot of people that may not have the opportunity to have a Christmas meal and I just like being able to give to the community.”
