It took more than a week, but the Bailey Wipff led Tarleton TexAnns finally notched their first win of the 2016-17 season Friday with a big victory over Western State Colorado University.
After a relatively close first quarter, the TexAnns used a strong defensive performance in the second quarter to take control of the game.
Leading only 10-9 entering the frame, the TexAnns managed to stifle the Lady Mountaineer offense holding them to only six points in the quarter.
Scoring 15 points themselves, the TexAnns headed to halftime with a commanding 25-10 advantage.
The high pressure defense continued to in second half as Tarleton once again held Western State to only six points, while posting 16 points themselves to hold a 20-point, 41-21 lead entering the game’s final quarter.
From there, the double-digit lead proved to be enough, despite the Lady Mountaineers outscoring the TexAnns 16-11 in the fourth to clinch a 52-37 victory.
One of the game deciding statistics was the TexAnns ability to shoot from the field. Tarleton shot 23-54 from the field, or 42.6 percent, while holding Western State to a poor 34 percent (16-47).
Bailey Wipff led the Texans offensively shooting an impressive 7-11 from the field for 16 points. Also having solid performances were Ikpeaku Iwobi and Kylie Collins who each finished with eight points.
