A woman is hospitalized after she was struck by a jeep while crossing Washington Street Tuesday evening.

The accident happened about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Washington and St. Felix streets.

“(The pedestrian) disregarded the no crossing sign and walked into traffic,” said Lt. Robbie Rudder with the Stephenville Police Department. “CareFlite was initially called but it was canceled and she was taken to the hospital by ambulance.”

The victim reportedly had serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The speed limit for the area where the accident occurred is 40 mph.

A local man who asked not to be named said he saw the accident in his rear view mirror.

“I was about three cars in front of it and was at a standstill,” he said. “I saw someone walk into traffic and get hit by a jeep. She was flung into the other lane and it looked like she got hit by a Suburban. There were lots of people running to help.”

Rudder said the victim was only struck by the jeep and its driver reported having sun in her eyes.

The driver will not face any charges.
