An early first half lead and a 16 point performance from Bailey Wipff wasn’t enough for the TexAnns Saturday as they fell to St. Mary’s in the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic finale.
The first quarter was a deadlock for the most part between the TexAnns and Lady Rattlers.
Both teams shot 50 percent or better from the field and they exchanged the lead eight times. A late 4-0 run to end the frame gave the TexAnns a slight 16-13 advantage going into the second quarter.
An early Trejouir Wilson layup extended the run to 6-0 and gave Tarleton a five point, 18-13 lead.
Over a large chunk of the quarter, St. Mary’s outscored the TexAnns 13-8, partially due to solid defense which resulted in a two minute and 51 second scoreless streak for Tarleton. That dry spell was eventually ended by an Ikpeaku Iwobi free throw, but Tarleton didn’t sink a field goal for more than the quarter’s last four and a half minutes allowing the Lady Rattlers to take a 30-26 lead into halftime.
The second half began somewhat like the game’s first quarter.
Both teams matched one another point, for point in the beginning, even though the Lady Rattlers reached their largest lead of the game, six points, with 9:23 left in the quarter. The TexAnns later used a 5-0 run to tie things back up, 41-41.
St. Mary’s would answer with an 8-2 run of their own, while holding Tarleton to another scoreless streak from the field. This one lasting the final 4:28 of the third quarter. That drought resulted in St. Mary’s taking a five-point, 49-44 lead into the game’s final frame.
The game’s fourth quarter consisted of more back and forth basketball as St. Mary’s held a slim 59-53 lead with a little more than three minutes remaining in the game.
The Lady Rattlers were finally the team that went cold from the field as they couldn’t make anything other than free throws over a four minute span. Unfortunately for Tarleton, the TexAnns were scoreless for close to five minutes themselves and couldn’t cut into St. Mary’s lead resulting in the Lady Rattlers holding on for a 65-53 win.
Senior guard Bailey Wipff led Tarleton offensively in the game as she finished 5-11 from the field for 16 points. Wipff also brought down four rebounds and dished two assists.
Mackenzie Hailey also had a solid performance with 10 points and five rebounds.
The TexAnns fall to 0-2 on the season with the loss and will be back in action on November 18 against Western State in the Colorado State-Pueblo Invitational.
