Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240 will host the 95th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Erath County Courthouse this Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Burton Smith, commander of Post 240 said, “It will be held by the Veterans Monument and we are expecting between 75 and 100 people from the community to attend, including veterans from all branches of the military. We’re asking that everyone arrive no later than 10:15 so that we can start the ceremony promptly at 10:30.”
He added that Belknap and College streets will be closed prior to the ceremony, and Washington Street will be closed during the event.
Smith said Marine Corps Battle of Fallujah veteran and multiple Purple Heart recipient Jimmy Bell will be the keynote speaker.
“He’s from Stephenville and his stepfather and brothers are all Marine Corp veterans as well,” Smith explained. “Jimmy will be the first War on Terror-era veteran to be the keynote speaker and it gives us all a chance to recognize the service of our military people from this era.”
There will be coffee and donuts prior to the ceremony provided by Erath County United Way and InterBank. Highlights of the morning’s event are:
• Opening Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance
• Welcome remarks by Burton Smith
• Keynote speaker: Jimmy Bell, USMC
• TSU ROTC Color Guard posting Colors and Rifle Salute
• Playing of Taps and Laying of Wreath at the Veterans Monument.
