An accident that claimed the life of a Tarleton State University student occurred Friday afternoon, reportedly as she was on her way home to Zephyr for the weekend.

McKenzie Cox, 18, was a freshman and track athlete who had worked at New Life Assembly Church, according to her Facebook page. 

Cox was traveling west on US Hwy. 67 in a 2004 Ford passenger car when she lost control of the vehicle and was ejected, according to the DPS accident report. She was not wearing a seat belt. 

Cox was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 6:54 p.m.

The accident is under investigation by DPS Trooper Mitchell Best.
