Abilene Wylie and Stephenville put on a volleyball clinic Thursday evening in the Area round of the playoffs in Eastland, but it was the Lady Bulldogs who came out on top in a highly competitive three set match.
Wylie and Stephenville were essentially playing point for point in the match’s first set until the Lady Bulldogs used a 6-3 run to stretch their lead to 17-12.
After a Stephenville timeout it was the Honeybees’ turn to go on a bit of a run themselves.
Over the next 11 points, Stephenville managed to win seven of them cutting Wylie’s lead to two, 21-19.
The Lady Bulldogs however, withstood the late barrage from Stephenville to hold on for a 25-23 win in the first set.
The match’s second set was maybe even more exciting as Wylie ran out to an early 7-4 lead, before the Honeybees took their first lead of the set 9-8. Over the course of the second set, the two teams traded leads seven times, the last being when Wylie scored to overtake Stephenville 21-20, before clinching the second 25-23.
With all of the momentum in Wylie’s favor, Stephenville struggled out of the gate in the third set. After the first 12 points, the Honeybees already faced a six-point deficit, 9-3.
Despite the lead, Stephenville rallied to make the score manageable going on a 6-3 run, before closing the gap even further to only a 14-13 Wylie advantage.
It wasn’t enough for Stephenville though as the Lady Bulldogs put a stop to the late Stephenville threat seizing the third set 25-23.
Jayci Morton led the Honeybees in kills with nine, while Emily Brandon added another seven.
Taylor Garber and Hannah Huckabee combined for 25 assists in the match, with Garber leading the way with 17.
Defensively, Hailey Martin finished with a team high 22 digs, while Jayci Morton added another 17.
