More than 20 million Americans over the age of 12 struggle with some form of addiction, according to the Addiction Center.

Now you can show your support by honoring those who have lost their lives to substance abuse at an upcoming event.

STAR Council’s Erath County Community Coalition will hold a candlelight vigil from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Birdsong Amphitheater in Stephenville City Park.

“There’s a negative stigma attached to substance abuse,” Coalition Coordinator Denise Harroff said. “So a lot of times people will go so far as lying about how their loved ones lost their lives due to substance abuse. So we’re wanting them to feel supported and show them that there’s a community behind them. That’s the purpose of this event, to give a comfortable and positive vibe to people who have lost loved ones.”

Harroff got the idea from another organization that holds vigils and after running it by the coalition, the event was born.

“We’re going to have a memorial table set up and we’re going to have a prayer, a speaker from Celebrate Recovery and a resources table about treatment and counseling,” Harroff said. “The Tarleton choir is also going to be there, so we’re going to have a moment of silence and the choir will be singing a nice acapella piece.”

Refreshments will be provided and the event is open to the public.

“Even if you haven’t lost anyone to substance abuse we would love for you to come and show your support for those who have,” Harroff said.
