Every year kids line the streets anxiously awaiting to fill their bags and buckets to the brim with Halloween treats at the Safe Trick ‘R Treat on the Square event and the Stephenville Public Library is gearing up to hand out their own special “treats” this year with its annual Say Boo For Books! drive.

From now until the Safe Trick ‘R Treat event - taking place from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31 - the library will be collecting new or like new books for babies, children and young teens.

“Boo for Books is definitely my favorite night at the Stephenville Public Library. I love seeing the little ghosts and goblin’s eyes light up when they see the tables of books,” said library director Mary Meredith. “We hand out lots of candy, but it’s the free books that the trick-or-treaters really enjoy.”

Thanks to the help of the community, last year the SPL gave away more than 1,000 books and are hoping to give out more this year.

“Help the SPL encourage a love of reading and books by donating new or gently used toddler board books, easy reader picture books and junior chapter books,” Meredith said.

So if you’re looking to narrow down your book collection or just want to buy new books for area kiddos, bring them to the library or give them a call at 254-918-1240 and the staff will be happy to pick them up for you.
