CJ Armstrong was thrilled when he learned that he was the local veteran chosen to be honored during American Hero Night tonight at Lone Star Arena.

The Huckabay resident and Army veteran will be recognized in front of a large crowd during the PRCA Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo.

“I’m thrilled to be part of something like this,” Armstrong said. “It shows me that the community really cares about its veterans.”

Armstrong was chosen after a selection process involving the late Chris Kyle’s family.

He and his wife Melissa live in Huckabay with their two children. Melissa is a teacher’s aide at the Huckabay School and CJ is a full time student at Tarleton State University majoring in wildlife science.

Armstrong joined the Army in 2006 after graduating from Mildred High School.

He served a tour in Afghanistan with a cavalry unit out of Fort Drum, NY.

“I was the communications person for our platoon,” he said.

Last year, the CCPRA honored American Navy veteran Paula Ludwick, providing over $20,000 in cash, gift cards and donated services to help her family rebuild their home that was partially destroyed by a tornado.
