Stephenville High School came together at Friday morning’s pep rally to honor three-year-old Luke Nelson, this year’s Heart of Gold recipient.
Luke was diagnosed with neuroblastoma after a mass was found in his stomach back in April. Since then he has been through a battery of tests, treatments and surgery.
Though Luke himself was unable to attend the pep rally, his mother Mia Nelson was there to accept the gifts from the Yellow Jacket football and Honeybee basketball teams, which included a picture of Luke and a football autographed by the Yellow Jackets, super hero T-shirts and a basketball autographed by the Honeybees.
SHS and Barefoot Athletics have been selling Heart of Gold T-shirts to help raise funds for the Nelson family and almost every person who attended the pep rally could be seen sporting a Luke Nelson shirt.
“We usually raise about $10,000 for our recipients,” SHS athletic secretary Lisa Hughes said in a previous interview.
