Rape, Aggression, Defense [R.A.D.] classes − for women only − start Monday, Sept. 12 on the Tarleton campus and continue on Sept. 14, 19, and 20 from 6-9 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
R.A.D. is a nationally-recognized alliance of self defense educators dedicated to enhancing defensive options for women and children.
The course is taught at Tarleton during the fall and spring semesters by instructors Detective Kristie Bint, Sgt. Amanda Miller, and Molly Smith. Classes are limited in size and the first class is Monday, so women who are interested need to sign up immediately.
Asked about how long the classes have been taught at TSU, Bint said, “I’m not exactly sure but well over 15 years. Sgt. John Hudson was teaching it when I came here 15 years ago, so it’s been going on a long time.”
She says that the other instructors, Smith and Miller have been teaching the class for about three years, adding, “Molly Smith was one of our students and became very interested in becoming a certified instructor and did so.”
Earning the certification requires attending and passing a comprehensive, 40-hour course, she says.
“We usually have about 30 women and the class is not just for Tarleton students; the public is certainly welcome to attend and girls as young as 13 can participate with parental consent,” Bint says.
According to the press release provided by the Tarleton State University Police Department “The cornerstone of the R.A.D. System is that this course has its foundations in education and awareness. The course includes lecture, discussion and self defense techniques for women of all ages and abilities.”
Bint added, “People have inquired as to whether this class is offered to men, and unfortunately, at this time it is not. However we are looking for a program like this for males, but the only one we’ve found is in Florida, and that’s just not possible within our budget. But we’ll keep looking. ”
R.A.D. is the largest organization of its kind and the only organization ever endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators [I.A.C.L.E.A.].
To register, or for more information, call Detective Bint a 968-9565 or email her at email@example.com.
NOTE: If you are going to take the R.A.D. course, Bint asks that you please meet in the foyer of the Kinesiology Building [Wisdom Gym] a few minutes ahead of the start time, and you will be taken to the classroom by the instructors.
