The Huckabay ISD board of trustees are making progress on finding its next superintendent.

Board president Greg Stewart said the board is meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight to interview the final candidate for the position.

“We received about 40 applications and have narrowed the search down to five candidates,” Stewart said. “We have some very good applicants, which means that it’s not an easy choice, but that’s a good thing.”

Dr. Cheryl Floyd announced her resignation on May 17 after serving as Huckabay’s superintendent for 14 years. Her last day is Aug. 31.

Stewart said the board will meet again next week to decide on the finalist, but will likely not make the announcement for at least three weeks.

“We hope to have someone in place by the beginning of the (school) year, but if we don’t we will name an interim,” he said.
