FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Investigators say an off-duty North Texas police officer has shot a robbery suspect holding a box cutter.

Fort Worth police say the suspect was hospitalized in critical condition following the shooting early Thursday.

The Fort Worth officer and an off-duty Tarrant County sheriff's deputy were working security when one heard a police call about a person robbed at a gas station.

Police Sgt. Marc Povero says the officers responded and saw a man holding what looked like a silver handgun. The officers yelled for the man to stop. The man refused to drop the silver object, pointed it toward the deputy and then the police officer fired.

Investigators later determined the suspect had a box cutter.

The officer is on paid administrative leave during a review of the incident.
