A new non-profit organization, Honor Veterans Now, has partnered with Meals on Wheels of Erath County in providing funding to serve meals to veterans under the age of 60 in the area.
“We only have a few people in that program at the moment, so we have room if there’s anybody out there under the age of 60 who’s a veteran,” Whitney Lee, executive director of MOWEC, said. “They can call us and we will help get them signed up.”
HVN was established in September 2015 and is headquartered in Fredericksburg.
“We started off with an initial donor, a gentleman who wanted to help meet this need and so right now that’s the funding that we’re using primarily,” Erin Jordan, of HVN, said. “We have had two other donors - one from a foundation and one from a church - so we’re in the process in growing and learning how to do more fundraising.”
The organization was created after a Fredericksburg couple learned that many veterans in their area did not meet criteria for any VA benefits and were in need of hot meals on a regular basis.
“Today the organization funds daily meals for over 300 vets in 27 counties, including Erath, and is striving to provide meals to needy vets in all 254 Texas counties,” the press release states. “If the program is successful and self-sustaining, it will expand to other states.”
In a previous article the E-T wrote about this partnership, Lee said she was excited to be contacted by HVN and start this new program in the county.
“We, as an organization, have always tried to do what we can for local vets,” Lee said in a previous interview. “But the younger folks can sometimes fall through the cracks because of the way federal funding is set up. I’m excited to be working with HVN.”
