After a somewhat slow start at the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament Thursday, the Stephenville Yellow Jackets came out and clinched the top spot in their pool to advance to the championship bracket.

The Yellow Jackets began the day with a heartbreaker against La Grange.

After a very efficient first half on the offensive side of the ball,

Stephenville struggled to move down the field in the second half.

Quarterback Easton Jones eventually hit receiver Blake Aragon for a

late touchdown, but on the point-after attempt the Yellow Jackets

failed to convert allowing La Grange to run out of the clock for a

one-point win.

Stephenville did manage to notch their first win of the tournament in

their second game thanks to a 58-33 win over Grace Community (Tyler).

The offense was much more polished against the Cougars and were led by

Jones and receiver Cameron Frazier, who hauled in four touchdown

passes in the game.

In addition to the offensive explosion, the Yellow Jacket defense also

recorded several key stops, including an interception by safety Mason

The third game of the day against El Campo had plenty of implications

as it would decide which teams played in which bracket, depending on

the result.

Stephenville got off to a solid start as they took the lead twice in

the first half. However, even a solid first half performance by the

Yellow Jacket defense, which included two interceptions, couldn't keep

the Rice Birds at bay as they two teams were tied at 14 at the end of

the half.

In the second half, the difference was once again a point after attempt, but this time it worked Stephenville’s way.

Early in the half, Easton Jones hooked up with Mason Holstein for a score and converted a two-point conversion which gave the Yellow Jackets a 22-20 lead. Later, El Campo once again found the end zone, but couldn’t convert the point after.

With less than two minutes remaining, Jones found receiver Blake Aragon cutting across the middle of the field for a huge gain, which eventually set up the go-ahead score which was hauled in by Mason Holstein.

Moments later, after an El Campo failed hail mary attempt, the Yellow Jackets found themselves atop the group after finishing 2-1 on the day.

The Yellow Jackets will begin play in the championship bracket at 9 a.m. Friday against Argyle.
