Stephenville survived a late scare Tuesday against Mineral Wells in a 7-6 victory for their second district win in three games.

The Rams started the game off scoring a run in the first inning, but Stephenveille also had an opportunity to get some runs across, but with the bases loaded and two outs, they couldn’t find a timely hit.

After a scoreless second inning, the Yellow Jackets snatched their first lead of the night after Mineral Wells stranded a runner at third in the third inning.

A Stephenville player managed to score on a wild pitch and then Cody Storrs slapped a double give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead.

The scoring outburst didn’t end there.

After holding the Rams scoreless again in the top of the fourth, Cole Harmon hit a single to right field which was overrun by the Mineral Wells right fielder. The error allowed two runs to score and for Harmon to reach third base.

Caleb Gibbons managed to drive in Harmon on a fielders choice in the next at bat to extend Stephenville’s lead to 5-1.

Mineral Wells did manage to score five more runs in the game, including two in the seventh which tied the game at six. However, Stephenville did have enough left in their bats to squeak one more out in the bottom of the game’s last inning thanks to a walk-off Derek Gifford single.

Harmon led Stephenville from the batter’s box with two hits and two runs batted in. Also recording hits were Sam Weber, Derek Gifford and Cody Storrs.

Caleb Gibbons started the game for Stephenville and went six innings allowing six hits, an earned run and striking out 10.

The Yellow Jackets will continue district play Friday when they visit top ranked Abilene Wylie with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
