Old-fashion chocolate buttermilk layer cake

This  recipe is over 50 years old. It was given to my mom by one of her very dear friends when I was young. She made this for my 3rd birthday and we have had it many times in between. It's a wonderful dessert to have for any gathering.

Happy and blessed Thanksgiving to you all.

2 cups sugar

2/3 cup shortening

3 eggs

2 cups flour

1/4 t salt

1/2 cup cocoa

2 tsp baking soda

2 cups buttermilk

1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray three 9-inch round cake pans. Cream sugar and shortening together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each one.  Sift flour, salt, and cocoa in bowl. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk. Alternate flour and buttermilk beating after each addition. Add vanilla. Pour into prepared pans and bake 20-25 minutes until done.

Frosting recipe:

1 pound powdered sugar

6 Tbsp milk
