The Teha Lanna Chapter NSDAR met in Stephenville recently in the home of member Anita Lane for a salad luncheon in honor of the 2016 recipients of their Good Citizen awards and Eloise Horak Memorial Scholarship winners.
Lindy Kay Fletcher from Dublin, Mahalia Majors from Gorman, James ”J.W.” Weiss from Huckabay, Jessica Marie Lynn from DeLeon, Timothy Lynne Griffin from Stephenville, Kandace Donald from Comanche and Hanna Jean Mabry from Stephenville were each presented with the NSDAR Good Citizen Award.
Each of these students wrote an essay for consideration by a committee. Based on their essays, three of the students were selected as recipients of the Scholarships. First, second and third place scholarships went to Hanna Mabry, Kandace Donald and Timothy Griffin respectively.
The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, and is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. The program is only open to high-school seniors whose schools are accredited by their state board of education and only one student per year may be honored as a school’s DAR Good Citizen. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.
