Troopers at border make big money

State troopers are banking huge sums of overtime — some more than six figures in a year — under Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security push. Since the operation began in March 2021, the Texas Department of Public Safety has paid at least $68 million in overtime to officers sent to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Kay Trent was already attending Austin Community College while living in the San Antonio area when she decided to moved to Austin to qualify for lower tuition rates. Trent, 29, a former English as a second language teacher, sold nearly all of her belongings to move to the city about eight months ago and then was immediately confronted by the city’s high rents.

Is ‘Tornado Alley’ shifting east?

On average, 1,200 tornadoes hit the United States each year, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), and while twisters can happen at any time and in any state, the prevailing wisdom has held that most of the large twisters occur in Tornado Alley, an expansive area within the central U.S. designated by meteorologists in the mid-20th century. That definition may be changing.

WHO: COVID-19 has killed about 15M

LONDON – The World Health Organization estimates that about 15 million people were killed either by coronavirus or by its impact on overwhelmed health systems in the past two years, more than double the official death toll of 6 million. Most of the fatalities were in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas.
