Rilyn Westbrook has been involved in FFA and soccer her senior year at Stephenville High School, but after graduation will go in a different direction and study the fashion industry.
Westbrook has been a member of FFA all four years of high school, this year being on the radio and public relations teams. The teams received fourth in the district, but were unable to advance to the area competition.
“In radio we get a topic, like this year was white tail deer, and we go in to a room and act as if we’re broadcasting as an actual radio station,” she said. “In public relations, it’s kind of like theatre, you have a script and you have to memorize it. You get props and you act it out in front of the judges and it’s related to agriculture in some type of way. My favorite part is that you get to learn a lot and you have to practice your time management skills and responsibility.”
Westbrook was also on the varsity soccer team making it all the way to the regional tournament.
“We ended up first in district and that’s been the first time in I don’t know how long, maybe in history,” she said. “My favorite part was that all of my best friends played soccer, so it was fun getting to play with them and one of the girls is going to Florida to play, University of Miami, so that was really cool to play alongside her. It’s a fun experience.”
After taking a trip to New York City this past December, Westbrook really decided that the fashion industry was something she wanted to make her career.
“I’m going to be attending Texas Tech University and I plan on majoring in apparel manufacturing and design and then minor in marketing,” she said. “I plan to live in New York for two years after that and then come back. I also want to study abroad in college and join a sorority.”
Clearly, she has big plans for her future.
“I’d like to get a job as a buyer for Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus but that’s really hard and it’s really competitive too; you have to work your way up,” she said. “I would like to get an internship or a job (in New York) and then come back here and live in Fort Worth or Dallas.”
Westbrook also wants to experience fashion overseas studying abroad somewhere like Paris, France or Italy.
Though her future plans are pretty much laid out, she said there are things she will miss about Stephenville High School.
“I’m going to miss the football games and how close everyone has gotten this year,” she said. “It’s a big community with a college in it, but it’s still small and everybody knows each other here and the school spirit is just awesome.”
