Tarleton State University’s rodeo teams enjoyed a successful outing this past weekend in their second competition of the 2015-2016 season, with the cowgirls earning the women’s team championship and the men finishing as the reserve champion team at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.

Tarleton’s cowboys are currently atop the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s (NIRA) Southwest Region standings with 748.33 points, ahead of both second place Western Texas College (625) and Texas Tech University (590), while the women’s team is fourth in the region with 280 points.

In Alpine, Tarleton’s Tyler Berghuis tied for the lead in the bareback riding, splitting with Ranger College’s Zachary Campbell, and each earning 141 points. The purple and white crowded the field with Zach Lomax placing third with 139 points, followed by Kody Lamb who received 138 points and Jacob Springer finishing in sixth with 130 points at Sul Ross State.

Kyle Parrish was fifth in the tie down roping after a 21.6-second effort in the final round.

On the women’s side, Bailee Snow led the pack in the barrel racing winning the event with 32.29 points over the weekend. Tarleton’s Susanna Jacobi finished fifth with 33.1 points while Kynder Starr rounded out the field in eighth place with 33.21 points.

In the breakaway roping Lauren Bane won reserve champion with 5.9 points, Baili Collins third, Hannah Haugen fourth and Caitlin Eakin fifth.

Other qualifiers for the short round in Alpine include, Jacob Springer, Jacob Lewis, Brody Yeary, Chance Taylor, Riley Chown, Brice Carmichael, Michael Tash, Joel Bond and Allison Danley.

Next up for Tarleton rodeo teams are competitions at Vernon College, Oct. 1-3, Frank Phillips College, Oct. 8-10, and Texas Tech, Oct. 15-17.
